Music
We are extremely proud that all children from year 1 to year 6 have weekly music lessons with a specialist teacher Chris. They also have weekly singing assemblies with a specialist music teacher.
Music at Torridon is a key part of the creative curriculum strategy. Children experience a mix of deep instrumental learning, live composition and improvisation, and music technology based lessons.
There a many opportunities for students to perform, including instrumental recitals, fairs and concerts. More than 1 in 10 students currently take instrumental lessons with our fully qualified tutors on violin, piano, guitar, drum kit, saxophone, clarinet and recorder. We have a strong track record in students passing and achieving higher passes in exams taken on these instruments through ABRSM, Rockschool and Trinity Laban boards.
In line with the national curriculum, our intent is that all children:
* perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
* learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use
technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
* understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics,
tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
The intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. Our objective is to develop a curiosity and enjoyment for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music. Also to develop an unbiased respect for the way any person may wish to make their preferred type of music a part of their lives. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences, to involve themselves in music in a variety of different contexts.
Our music lessons focus on developing skills in singing, performing and composing music. We also listen to a wide range of musical genres, styles and traditions, which allow children to develop an understanding and appreciation of all music.
At Torridon Primary School, we are passionate about giving children the opportunity to take part in music- making. Children have weekly lessons in our music room with our specialist teacher where they have opportunities to sing, play, perform, record, compose and listen to music from a wide range of different cultures and eras.
Individual and Group Music Lessons
Alongside weekly music lessons our children also have the opportunity to take lessons in an instrument individually or as part of a group. Instruments on offer include violin, piano clarinet, guitar, ukulele, recorder and saxophone which are all taught by our highly skilled peripatetic tutors.
