History

At Torridon, we are passionate about our children being: curious about the past, gaining a secure knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, becoming critical thinkers and reflecting on past events and the process of change.

Our History curriculum teaches our children to appreciate the diversity of societies and to understand their own identity. History has always been at the centre of cross-curricular learning at Torridon. The history curriculum, draws from and makes full use of, the immediate and wider local area, thus enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the rich history of Lewisham and London. Topics are taken from the national curriculum and are sensitive to children’s interests, as well as the context of the local area. The history curriculum is carefully planned and structured to ensure that current learning is linked to previous learning by the use of chronology, and that the school’s approaches are consistent with current pedagogy. We aim to ensure that all children:

  • To develop all children and young people’s understanding of their place in the world; to promote curiosity and fascination – to become an active learner with a passion for history
  •  To develop in all children and young people a sense of who they are locally, nationally and globally
  •  To develop well-rounded and successful historians, informed by the National Curriculum, and exposed to planned and differentiated lessons, taught with a clear history objective
  •  To develop a knowledge of chronology within which children and young people can organise their understanding of the past
